How to transfer vinyl labels and decals at home

When you order vinyl labels or decals from AW Designs, your order will be dispatched with written instructions, an alcohol wipe to clean your selected surface and a plastic application card to help you eliminate any air bubbles or wrinkles.

Step by Step Guide

1. Ensure your surface is dry and clean, then wipe with the enclosed alcohol wipe and allow to air dry.

2. Remove the backing paper from your label to reveal the sticky side. Do NOT remove the transfer tape yet.

3. Apply the label, sticky side down, to your surface and then smooth out any air bubbles with the enclosed plastic card by scraping it along across the top of the transfer tape protecting the top of your label.

4. Slowly peel off the transfer tape.

5. Be sure to let your new label cure - this takes up to 48 hours. During this time, don't wash or rub the label or decal.

Watch this short video to see a demonstration. While the video refers to vinyl labels, the process for transferring decals is the same.

Tips and Tricks

Getting your labels straight.

Some people can just "eyeball" it, but if it's important to you to get the placement of your label or decal just right, then there are a few things to you can to get the best result.

The transfer tape has gridlines aligned to the bottom of your label and you can use these as a guide.

You could also mark a level line on your surface with masking tape, or a whiteboard marker (on glass or plastic). This is a great way to ensure consistent placement across several containers.

What if my labels are peeling up with the backing paper.

In most cases, the backing paper will peel away easily, like the back of a sticker.

But on rare occasions, your vinyl label may start to lift away from the transfer tape when you peel your backing paper up.

If that happens, try peeling the paper back, instead of up.

Lift up a corner of the backing paper and then fold it back on to itself and slowly peel backwards.
